Cherishing Life After Adversity: HKCT Encourages Graduates to Move Forward with Gratitude and Contentment

On December 13, HKCT Institute of Higher Education and Hong Kong College of Technology (collectively “HKCT”) held the “HKCT Graduation Ceremony 2025” to congratulate over 600 graduates who completed bachelor’s degrees, higher diplomas, and other programs. This year’s ceremony was conducted in an atmosphere of solemnity and gratitude. During the event, faculty and students paid tribute to the victims of the recent Tai Po fire, reminding everyone of life’s fragility and the importance of treasuring every moment of mutual support.

Graduate Representatives Share: Passing On Knowledge, Serving the Community

WONG Hei Nga, Zoe a graduate of the Higher Diploma in Tourism Management (Culinary), shared that HKCT provided comprehensive culinary training facilities and industry-aligned internship opportunities, laying a solid foundation for her career. Through various internships, competitions, and industry exchange activities, she deeply felt the mutual support of mentors and peers. She expressed that being invited back to share experiences with junior students and pass on what she learned is the best way to continue this journey of companionship and growth.

POON Man Yuk, a graduate of the Bachelor of Social Sciences (Hons) in Social Work, reflected that returning to campus for two years taught her the power of “helping others,” which often begins with small acts of care. She founded the Narrative Art Therapy Society at HKCT to promote mental health and participated in numerous on-campus and community services. She also received multiple scholarships and awards and accumulated over 800 hours of practical experience through internships, solidifying her mission to serve the community.

Messages from Leaders: Embrace Gratitude and Responsibility Amid Change

Dr WONG Yau Kar, David GBS, BBS, JP, Chairperson of the Board of Governors of HKCT Institute of Higher Education and Management Board of Hong Kong College of Technology emphasized that in an era of global transformation and rapid technological advancement, knowledge is important—but even more crucial are lifelong learning, an innovative spirit to embrace change, and a sense of social responsibility to apply what one has learned for the greater good.

Professor FAN Yiu Kwan, BBS, JP, Governor of the Board of the HKCT Institute of Higher Education and School Supervisor of Hong Kong College of Technology, encouraged graduates to maintain knowledge sensitivity and adaptability, cultivate critical thinking and problem-solving skills, broaden international perspectives while staying rooted in national development, and uphold integrity and responsibility to become citizens who contribute to society.

Professor CHAN Cheuk Hay, President, shared an inspiring story of survivors from the 2008 Wenchuan earthquake, noting that disasters often strike unexpectedly, but adversity can sometimes ignite a renewed vitality in life. He urged graduates to remain steadfast in both good times and bad, prepare for challenges, and realize their personal value and social responsibility.

Professor LEE Wai Chi, Ada, Acting President and Vice President, remarked that after the Tai Po fire, HKCT faculty and students quickly engaged in emotional support and community service, because facing hardships is only possible when we stand together. She reminded graduates to maintain care, physical and mental well-being, and a habit of continuous learning as they enter the workforce, integrating personal aspirations with national development.

Starting with Gratitude, Moving Toward the Future

The ceremony concluded in a warm yet solemn atmosphere. Faculty members encouraged graduates to cherish life and loved ones even more after adversity; to carry the knowledge, skills, and companionship gained at HKCT; and to move forward step by step with gratitude as a driving force—illuminating others and contributing to society along their future paths.
